01What is matrescence?

Matrescence (mah-TRESS-ence) is the developmental transition of becoming and being a mother. It is often compared with adolescence because it can reshape so many parts of life at once: your body, brain, emotions, relationships, identity, roles, routines, and sense of self.

It may begin during pregnancy, adoption, or another path into motherhood—and it can keep unfolding as your child and your life change. Loving your child and missing parts of who you were can both be true. Matrescence is not a diagnosis; it is language for a real and layered life transition.

02What if I want more support, such as individual or couples therapy?

Drew conducts individual and couples therapy through CR Counseling. If you are interested in scheduling a consultation or intake appointment, call (205) 644-8796 or email info@crcounselingllc.com.

Private-pay, Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance, and sliding-scale options are available. Please contact CR Counseling directly to confirm current availability, benefits, and the option that fits your needs.

03Can I attend more than one group at a time?

Yes. You may attend as many groups as you would like when space and fit allow. We generally recommend completing one structured group at a time so you have room to focus on your most immediate needs, practice what you are learning, and avoid turning support into one more thing to manage. Your intake appointment can help you decide where to begin.

04Are all Ma.Mom.Mama groups therapy?

No. Still Me, Still Mom is a conversational support group, Matrescence: The Transition is a structured psychotherapy group, and Rage Has a Reason is an emotional-regulation skills group. The group description and intake appointment will clarify the purpose, expectations, and level of clinical support for each option.

05How do I know which group is the best fit?

You do not have to figure it out alone. Group placement begins with a 30-minute intake appointment to talk about what has been feeling hardest, what kind of support you want, your current supports, and what you hope to gain. Together, we will identify the group that best matches your needs and readiness—or discuss whether another level of care may serve you better.

06Who can participate, and are groups virtual?

Groups are currently offered virtually to adults located in Alabama at the time of service. Ma.Mom.Mama welcomes many paths into motherhood, including pregnancy, birth, adoption, and non-birthing parenthood, as well as different identities, cultures, family structures, and stages of motherhood. Each group may have additional fit guidelines that will be discussed during the intake appointment.

07What should I expect from a virtual group?

Expect a small group, clear agreements, therapist-led guidance, and room for both conversation and practical tools. Join from a private place where you can participate without driving or managing another task that needs your full attention. You never have to share every detail of your story, but respectful participation helps create a supportive experience for everyone.

08Is what I share in group confidential?

The facilitator follows professional privacy and confidentiality requirements, and every participant is asked to protect what others share. Because confidentiality depends on everyone in the room, it cannot be guaranteed in the same way it can in individual therapy. Group agreements, privacy limits, mandated-reporting duties, and telehealth expectations are reviewed before participation.

09What if I need urgent or crisis support?

Ma.Mom.Mama groups and resources are not emergency services. If you may hurt yourself or someone else, call 911 for imminent danger or call/text 988 for crisis support. Pregnant people, moms, new parents, and families may also call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262); the hotline offers support but is not a crisis line.
